'Little Lanterns' is named for its shorter stature, compared to the parent species, as well as its bright red and yellow springtime blooms. It is attractive and much welcomed during spring, being one of the first plants to emerge from winters cold. 'Little Lanterns' excels in shady settings along walkways, as a small to mid-sized ground cover, and in mixed plantings with clump forming ferns, European or Canadian ginger, Cimicifuga, Gaultheria, clump forming sedges and cultivars of Hakonechloa. It tolerates a wide range of soil conditions, including sandy soils and occasional drought (after establishment) and tends to be resistant to deer.
