This lovely native perennial is versatile enough to thrive in both typical garden conditions as well as wetland habits. This makes it great for rain garden planting, but it's also outstanding as a robust ground cover and companion in perennial borders. Swamp milkweed is clothed in elegant, mid green, lance-leaved foliage borne in opposite fashion from sturdy stems. During July to September, it bears rose pink, vanilla-scented flowers which draw butterflies like a magnet, especially swallowtails and monarchs. Their seed heads are also an attractive food source for many songbirds. Companions are numerous and include Eupatorium, coneflowers, tall phlox and ornamental grasses.
